China's foreign trade largely steady in first two months of 2025

      5:03pm 07 Mar, 2025 Victor Yang

Guangzhou (JLC), March 7, 2025--China’s foreign trade was largely steady in the first two months of 2025, with the total goods trade volume reaching 6.54 trillion yuan (about 912.07 billion U.S. dollars), according to data from the General Administration of Customs (GACC).

This represents a moderate drop of 1.2% from a year earlier, the data shows. After excluding the impact of incomparable factors--two fewer working days in January-February 2025 than in 2024, China's total imports and exports grew by 1.7% year on year, the GACC said.

Exports gained 3.4% year on year to 3.88 trillion yuan, while imports went down 7.3% to 2.66 trillion yuan, according to the data. In the terms of US dollars, exports grew 2.3% while imports dropped 8.4%.

The country’s imports and exports by ordinary trade dropped 3.6% to 4.20 trillion yuan, accounting for 64.3% of its foreign trade. Exports by this trade mode rose 2.5% to 2.55 trillion yuan, while imports plunged by 11.7% to 1.65 trillion yuan, the GACC data shows.

In contrast, China’s imports and exports by processing trade surged 7.1% to 1.20 trillion yuan, accounting for 18.3%. Exports grew 7.6% to 752.96 billion yuan and imports went up 6.4% to 446.18 billion yuan, the data indicates.

The foreign trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China’s largest trading partner, grew 4% to 1.03 trillion yuan in the two months, accounting for 15.8% of China’s foreign trade. The exports to the ASEAN grew 6.8% to 626.68 billion yuan, while the imports from the organization slipped 0.2% to 406.65 billion yuan.

The trade with the European Union (EU), China’s second largest trading partner, dipped 0.2% to 833.34 billion yuan. The exports to it gained 1.8% to 568.26 billion yuan, while the imports from it declined 4.3% to 265.08 billion yuan.

The trade with the U.S. went up 3.5% to 733.67 billion yuan, with the exports to the country at 543.13 billion yuan, up 3.4%, and the imports from it at 190.54 billion yuan, up 3.8%, according to the GACC data.
