Guangzhou (JLC), July 24, 2024 – China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) issued its highest red alert for Typhoon Gaemi, which is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the country's southern and eastern regions, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

Typhoon Gaemi, with a maximum wind speed of 55 meters per second, was located 195 kilometers southeast off Taiwan's Yilan County at 09:00 Beijing time on Wednesday.

The typhoon is expected to make landfall along the coast of central and northern Taiwan on Wednesday night. After crossing the island, it is projected to make a second landfall between Thursday afternoon and night along the coast between Fujian's Fuding and Jinjiang, the NMC said.

Affected by the typhoon, gales are forecasted to sweep parts of the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, including the waters near the Diaoyu Islands, the South China Sea, the Bashi Channel, the Taiwan Straits, as well as the coastal areas of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangsu, Shanghai and Taiwan, the Yangtze River estuary area and Hangzhou Bay from 14:00 Wednesday to 14:00 Thursday, it said.

Meanwhile, parts of Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan are expected to see heavy rainstorms, with precipitation up to 600 millimeters, the NMC said.

Fujian upgraded the emergency response level for typhoons from Level III to Level II on Wednesday morning.

Train services in Fujian province will be completely suspended for Thursday (July 25) and partially suspended for Friday (July 26).

For flight services, Fuzhou Changle International Airport has cancelled 13 flights so far. Several flights have been delayed, according to state-run Xinhua News Agency.
